The Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) or Dutch East India Company was a chartered company established in 1602, when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world’s first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies.

Statistically, the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the Asia trade. Between 1602 and 1796 the VOC sent almost a million Europeans to work in the Asia trade on 4,785 ships, and netted for their efforts more than 2.5 million tons of Asian trade goods. By contrast, the rest of Europe combined sent only 882,412 people from 1500 to 1795, and the fleet of the English (later British) East India Company, the VOC’s nearest competitor, was a distant second to its total traffic with 2,690 ships and a mere one-fifth the tonnage of goods carried by the VOC. The VOC enjoyed huge profits from its spice monopoly through most of the 17th century.

The Dutch East India Company remained an important trading concern for almost two centuries, paying an 18% annual dividend for almost 200 years. In its declining years in the late 18th century it was referred to as Vergaan Onder Corruptie (referring to the acronym VOC) which translates as ‘Perished by Corruption’. The VOC became bankrupt and was formally dissolved in 1800, its possessions and the debt being taken over by the government of the Dutch Batavian Republic. The VOC’s territories became the Dutch East Indies and were expanded over the course of the 19th century to include the whole of the Indonesian archipelago, and in the 20th century would form Indonesia.

The VOC consisted of six Chambers (Kamers) in port cities:
Amsterdam
Delft
Rotterdam
Enkhuizen
Middelburg
and
Hoorn.

Delegates of these chambers convened as the Heeren XVII (the Lords Seventeen). They were selected from the bewindhebber-class of shareholders.

Of the Heeren XVII, eight delegates were from the Chamber of Amsterdam (one short of a majority on its own), four from the Chamber of Zeeland, and one from each of the smaller Chambers, while the seventeenth seat was alternatively from the Chamber of Zeeland or rotated among the five small Chambers. Amsterdam had thereby the decisive voice. The Zeelanders in particular had misgivings about this arrangement at the beginning. The fear was not unfounded, because in practice it meant Amsterdam stipulated what happened.

Oosterland (1684) Note:  At the beginning of May 1697, the Oosterland, under the captainship of Pieter van Ede, was anchored at Table Bay, waiting for more ships to make the return voyage to Holland in convoy. The Oosterland had just arrived from an enduring three months return voyage from Ceylon (Sri-Lanka). On 23 May 1697, a strong gale started and a ship nearby the Oosterland, lost her anchor and slammed into her. The next day the Oosterland went drifting and she ran aground along with the Waddinxveen near Salt River Mouth. On grounding, she lost her main mast and broke up. Out of the more than 300 people on board, only 2 survived. The Oosterland was discovered by divers in 1988, and a maritime archaeological investigation of the site has been done since.

Voorschoten (1684) Note: On 31 December 1687 the Voorschoten left Delftshaven in the Netherlands with the first 22 Huguenot refugees on board. The three master was supposed to sail directly to the Cape. However, as the result of storm damage captain Frans Villierius was forced to land at Saldanha Bay on 13 April 1688, about 120 km from Table Bay. A message was sent by a Hottentot messenger to the governor Simon van der Stel at the Castle of Good Hope. The cutter Jupiter was then dispatched to fetch the stranded passengers. A further six ships – the Oosterland, Borsenburg, Schelde, Berg China, Zuid-Beveland and Wapen van Alkmaar -brought other Huguenots to the Cape.
